Andy Warhol at MAC Belfast

The MAC (Metropolitan Arts Centre) Belfast -up until April 28th -will host the first significant exhibition of Andy Warhol’s exhibition in Northern Ireland.


Andy Warhol is one of the most influential American artists to emerge in the post-war period. The power of Warhol’s work comes from its focus on fundamental human themes – the beauty and glamour of youth and fame, material culture, the passing of time and the presence of death. Employing mass-production techniques, Warhol challenged preconceived notions about the nature of art and erased traditional distinctions between fine art and popular culture.

The exhibition includes work from the ARTIST ROOMS’ impressive selection of 232 works which span the artist’s entire body of work and reflect his eclectic career and vibrant personality.

Roy Lichtenstein at the Tate Modern Gallery London

Retrospective exhibition from Roy Lichtenstein at the Tate Modern in London -from February 21st to May 27th-.

Co-organised by The Art Institute of Chicago and Tate Modern, this show brings together 125 of his most definitive paintings and sculptures .

Lichtenstein is renowned for his works based on comic strips and advertising imagery, coloured with his signature hand-painted Benday dots (remembering the quatricomy dots used in industrial or advertisisng silk screen printing).

Art Trade Shows in Madrid February 2013

If you are in Madrid and you like Art, there are now two activies you must follow: ART MADRID and ARCO.

We talked down below about Arco -Art Trade Show in Madrid-, that starts today and follows up to the 17th of this month. 201 galleries from 27 countries and more than 2,000 artists will be represented in Madrid -with with 133 foreign galleries and the International participation rising a 66%.

ART-MADRID is another Trade Show taking place in Madrid in the same dates -from February 13th to Feb. 17th-. This show receives a smaller number of galleries and has mostly presence of Galleries from Spain, but with a very good level. It also has a space for Young artists calles One Project which provides a flair of modernity and 'avantgarde'. 
Art Madrid receives more than 40,000 visitors and has been organized for eight years.

ARCO 2013 Contemporary Art Fair in Madrid - Feria de Arte Comtemporáneo en Madrid

Arco is about to start. The yearly Trade Show where 201 galleries from 27 countries -133 galleries from other countries are coming to Madrid - will be exhibiting artwork from main artists in their collections.

Is the 32nd edition of ARCO, and it is dedicated to Tukey -FOCUS TURQUÍA-, with 10 Galleries from this country.

SOLO PROJECTS, en colaboración con la Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional para el Desarrollo (AECID), reúne 21 proyectos de arte de artistas latinoamericanos seleccionados por los comisarios Inti Guerrero, director artístico asociado de TEOR/éTica (Costa Rica); Catalina Lozano, comisaria independiente y co-fundadora de de_sitio (México); Gabriel Pérez Barreiro, director de la Fundación Cisneros /Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros, (Nueva York y Caracas); Alexia Tala, comisaria independiente (Chile), y Cristiana Tejo, comisaria independiente (Brasil).

Grabados de David Hockney Ilustrando seis cuentos de los hermanos Grimm en la Fundación Canal

 David Hockney -nace en in Bradford (Yorkshire, Reino Unido) y vive en Los Angeles (California, EE.UU.) desde 1978-, conocido por ser uno de los exponentes principales del Arte Pop, y famoso por sus retratos de la sociedad californiana que vive en las mansiones con piscina de Hollywood Hill's de Los Angeles en los setenta.

Gran admirador de los cuentos de los hermanos Grimm, pensando en las posibilidades comerciales que podrían tener las ilustraciones de estos clásicos; edita, junto a su discípulo ,Maurice Payne, cerca de 80 grabados, de los cuales 39 fueron publicados y son los que podrán verse del 30 de enero al 14 de abril en la Fundación Canal -coincidiendo con el 200º aniversario de la primera edición de los cuentos de los hermanos Grimm-.

 ‘La princesa rescatada’, ‘El Sacritán disfrazado de fantasma’, ‘Rapunzel creciendo en su jardín’ o ‘La cocinera’ son algunos grabados -aguafuerte y aguatinta- que David Hockney editó entre 1969 y 1970. 

Parece que esta edición coincide con una época en la que, según él, tenía algunas necesidades económicas: “Empecé haciendo obra gráfica en 1961 porque me había quedado sin blanca, no podía comprar pintura y en el Departamento de Arte Gráfico te daban los materiales gratis” cuenta el artista.

Sin embargo,  Hockney experimenta en múltiples ocasiones con técnicas de 'artes gráficas' -sobretodo con litografía-, llegando incluso a montar un Taller en su estudio de Hollywood (Los Ángeles, California), como se puede ver en este extracto de su biografía:


. 1960–61 his first trip to New York in 1961, he meets William S. Lieberman, then Curator of Prints at the Museum of Modern Art, who buys two Hockney prints. 

. 1964 In January visits Los Angeles for the first time and meets Christopher Isherwood and Don Bachardy, Jack Larson and Jim Bridges, the dealer Nicholas Wilder and master printer Ken Tyler.
. 1973 Works in California, producing lithographs for the Gemini workshop. Picasso dies and Hockney produces a series of works inspired by the artist including the self-portrait prints The Student – Homage to Picasso and Artist and Model.He liven in Lucca (Italy) and then moved to Paris -where he produces highly worked academic drawings of friends including Celia Birtwell. He also experiments with new printing techniques and produces The Weather Series, lithographs influenced by the stylization of weather in Japanese art.

. 1976 detailed academic lithographs for Gemini entitled Friends.
 . 1978 A touring retrospective, David Hockney: Prints and Drawings, opens at the Yale Center for British Art, New Haven, and tours North America until 1980 when it closes at the Tate Gallery, London.
. 1979 Back in Los Angeles, he works at the Gemini workshop on a series of Matisse-influenced lithographs of Celia Birtwell and Ann Upton.
. 1981 Gemini publishes a series of new lithographs, mostly depicting Celia Birtwell.
. 1984 Returns to Mexico later with Evans
and Ken Tyler to experiment with a new technique – continuous tone lithography or the Mylar technique.
. 1985 Works with Ken Tyler on a series of technically complex lithographs based on his drawings from the previous autumn. The Moving Focus print series are the culmination of Hockney’s experiments with Cubism.
 . 1998 Also experiments with new techniques
in a series of etchings of flowers, chairs and portraits, working with Maurice Payne who sets up a print studio in Hockney’s Hollywood Hills home.



Cuatro ediciones de 100 ejemplares más 15 pruebas de autor, que comprendían sus ilustraciones y textos procedentes de la traducción de la versión de 1962. Otra serie de 100 ejemplares fue firmada por el artista. Más adelante, a mediados de los setenta, se imprimieron de forma masiva para su comercialización en establecimientos comerciales. 

Hockney ha sabido capturar de forma experta el humor de magia oscura mood de los cuentos.
